Introducing Non-Invasive Light Therapy at Lakes Region Retina for Dry AMD Treatment

Man With Coffee Cup

When a family member or patient is diagnosed with Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), the emotional and practical implications are immediately clear to everyone involved. For years, the lack of direct medical interventions for early stages left families feeling helpless as central vision slowly degraded.

At our medical clinic, we believe in proactive, evidence-based intervention. By adding the Valeda® Light Delivery System to our practice, Dr. David Williams offers patients, caregivers, and referring physicians a therapeutic alternative that may slow down the progression of early-to-intermediate Dry AMD.

Traditional Management of Dry AMD vs Photobiomodulation (PBM)

 Traditional Management:

  • Conservative observation (“Wait and See”).
  • Nutritional supplementation only (AREDS2).
  • No direct medical intervention for early/mid stages of dry AMD.

Valeda PBM Therapy:

  • Active, non-invasive cellular stimulation.
  • First and only FDA-approved treatment for early/intermediate care. AMD
  • Clinically shown to support retinal cell function.

Stabilizing the Retinal Environment

Dry AMD is characterized by the accumulation of extracellular debris (drusen), metabolic stress on photoreceptors, and local inflammation. Photobiomodulation (PBM)—the clinical science behind our medical-grade red light therapy—intervenes early by deploying three distinct wavelengths of light: yellow (590 nm), red (660 nm), and near-infrared (850 nm), each engineered to address specific biological targets in the eye:

  1. Enhancing metabolic output to process cellular waste effectively.
  2. Reducing localized inflammatory signaling that contributes to tissue decay.
  3. Upregulating cell-survival pathways to mitigate early vision loss.

Protecting Independence: Insights for Families and Caregivers

For families caring for an aging relative, our primary goal is maintaining functional independence—the ability to read medication labels, navigate stairs safely, and recognize faces. In clinical trials, a substantial cohort of patients treated with Valeda experienced an increase in visual clarity and improved contrast sensitivity, particularly in low-light environments.

Partnering with Central Minnesota Eye Care Professionals

We established Lakes Region Retina to bring tertiary retinal care directly to central and northern Minnesota. We view our clinic as an extension of your local primary eye care team. Optometrists and general ophthalmologists remain the front line for early drusen detection. Through timely referral for PBM therapy, we can collaboratively work to alter the trajectory of a patient’s Dry AMD before profound structural loss occurs.

To set up an appointment to see if PBM therapy for Dry AMD is right for you, send us a message or give our clinic a call. The Lakes Region Retina team is eager to share this innovative option with Dry AMD patients and providers.

Related FAQs:

Does PBM treatment cause discomfort or pain?

No. The treatment is painless and non-invasive. You sit in front of our device with your eyes open or closed as directed, experiencing only a safe light exposure without needles or medications.

Can Valeda reverse advanced vision loss or geographic atrophy?

Valeda is FDA-approved specifically to rejuvenate suffering, metabolically stressed cells in the early-to-intermediate stages. It cannot reverse the severe damage of advanced dry MD (geographic atrophy), which underscores why we emphasize early referral.

Will my eyes be dilated for every treatment session?

No. While a comprehensive, dilated retinal evaluation is mandatory for Dr. Williams to establish your candidacy, individual PBM treatment sessions do not require pupillary dilation, making it easy to drive yourself.

Is this new light therapy covered by Medicare or insurance?

Likely. For eligible patients, Valeda Photobiomodulation treatment can be a Medicare-covered therapy. Our financial counselors review all benefits with families prior to initiating the treatment series.

Where is the therapy performed, and how do we schedule?

Treatments are administered directly at our state-of-the-art facility in Baxter, Minnesota. Patients, family members, or caregivers can easily coordinate a visit by calling our office line at (218) 297-5344.
